Google Maps in Android Auto: will we soon have a speed limit?

Google knows the data on permitted speeds for the German market, but the speed limit display is not yet available. Why that might change. The EU is getting more and more rules for road traffic. In recent years, the focus has primarily been on things such as autonomous driving.

But a few other issues have also been addressed in recent months. These include new regulations for “general vehicle safety”. “Unprecedented measures” have been taken, the commission writes.

EU adopts new rules for better speed assistance

The intelligent speed assistant (ISA) is to become mandatory for new cars across Europe. This means that there is a system in the vehicles that can inform the driver in different ways that a different speed must be observed. This is interesting for Google because Google Maps is offered in cars via Android Auto and Android Automotive.

Google: Speed limits in Google Maps finally in Germany?

Not only in our opinion the right time to make the display of speed limits in Google Maps generally available. According to their own statements, Google has this data available in Germany, for example, but has so far not displayed the speed limits in Google Maps. I don’t see Google being forced to do this in the near future, but they may be building on the ISA requirements now.

For several years, many navigation systems from various vehicle manufacturers have been able to provide information about the permitted speed. Even without recognizing traffic signs. It is therefore a mystery to us why Google does not offer this feature in Maps, even when using Android Auto or Android Automotive. Perhaps we have now received the decisive impetus for this?
