Samsung is slashing production targets for Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5

Although today’s rumors are not a leak of the next-gen phone’s specs. However, we did get some information about the Z Fold 5’s possible camera specs and Samsung’s new sales strategy. According to a report from South Korea’s The Elec, Samsung is slashing its Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 shipping targets. That means the company plans to sell fewer foldable phones in 2023 than this year and before.

Specifically, Samsung appears to have set an overall shipment target of 10 million for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, of which the former is only 2 million. Samsung is understood to be betting bigger on its flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, and set shipments of the phone at 8 million units. By comparison, Samsung is said to be targeting 15 million units for the upcoming Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 this year.

Samsung’s lowering of its 2023 foldable phone target is no different from other manufacturers, except for rising raw material prices, a protracted Russia-Ukraine war, and slow economic growth. Of course, it’s too early to predict the actual production and shipment targets for these phones, as they’re nearly a year away from going on sale, and if things get better by then, Samsung may raise its targets closer to the launch.

TheElec also shared some specs of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to the outlet, the phone will have three cameras on the back, including Samsung’s 50-megapixel GN3 sensor, and the phone may also have a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is also expected to have three rear cameras, including a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto lens, perhaps Samsung will keep it on the Z Fold 5 Same setting.

In addition, the media said that both the Fold 5 and Flip 5 should run on the Snapdragon 8th-generation SoC, which is expected to be unveiled at the end of this year. There’s no suspense here, Samsung has always used Qualcomm’s flagship SoCs for its foldable phones, and it should be the same next year. By then, we may see the Snapdragon 8 Plus second-generation chip.
