Audio switching on Android is finally possible – provided you have the right earbuds. With the Pixel 6a and Pixel Buds Pro pre-order options, Google also revealed something about audio switching. So far you had to switch from device to device, that should be possible automatically in the future, users of the AirPods are also familiar with that.
Google’s audio switching technology builds on Fast Pair and even uses contextual information about what users are listening to tailor audio switching based on their actions. As always, this is of course optional.
There are several categories, ranked to determine how the priorities are set between phone calls, media, and all the sounds your devices make.
For example, if users are watching a video on their tablet and receive a notification on their phone, their headphone audio will not switch to their phone. However, when they receive a call, their headphones switch. A notification will also appear, allowing users to switch the audio back to the device they were originally listening on with a single tap.
According to Google, we know that users use a variety of devices beyond Android. With headphones that support Bluetooth multipoint, you can also connect up to two Bluetooth devices at the same time.
Introduce audio switching between Android phones and tablets with Bluetooth multipoint on the new Pixel Buds Pro. Audio switching technology will also be extended to select Sony and JBL headphones in the coming weeks.
By the way, it shouldn’t stay with Android. Audio switching will initially be available between Android devices, with plans to expand to more platforms and devices over time. If your headphones support both Bluetooth multipoint and audio switching, make sure the appropriate switches are enabled in the Device Details settings.
