Square Enix is about to launch Final Fantasy NFTs

In partnership with NFT ecosystem Enjin, Square Enix is about to release Final Fantasy NFTs. The digital card collection celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII will be released on the cross-chain network Efinity and available to users who purchase physical collectible items and is expected to launch in 2023.

Final Fantasy VII Cloud’s action figure is now available for pre-order; the Deluxe Edition will include a code to redeem the NFT version of the figurine. Pre-orders for the physical trading card will go live later this year.

Enjin says it is a “destination for ecologically conscious blockchain users,” which “provides eco-friendly solutions for building decentralized gaming products,” and is “committed to achieving carbon-neutral NFTs (by 2030).”

Given that Final Fantasy 7’s theme involves environmental protection, does it all seem a little ironic when the plot includes a major corporation sucking the life from the planet?

The launch of this series of NFTs follows a speech by SE President Yosuke Matsuda at the beginning of the year, in which he expressed hope that NFTs and blockchain technology will become a “major trend” in gaming. He reiterated his interest in the technology in April, though last month he claimed it was “premature” to make the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy blockchain games.
