PS5 2022 sales are down in Europe, but Xbox Series X | S and Switch sales are well

The latest market analyses published by GSD make even more evident the stock and supply problems suffered by Sony in these long months of pandemic and semiconductor crisis: in the first half of 2022, PS5 sales in Europe fell by 44% compared to the same period of the previous year.

From the report drawn up by GSD, taking a cue from data from the main videogame markets of the Old Continent, the great difficulties encountered by Sony emerge in satisfying the demand of video game enthusiasts eager to buy a PlayStation 5 (at reasonable prices and without compromising with scalpers, speculators and various profiteers).

The problems faced by the Japanese technology giant seem to only marginally affect direct competition from Nintendo and Microsoft, with Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X / S which respectively recorded + 7% and + 9% in sales in the first half of 2022 compared to the similar period of 2021.

Despite the contraction of 44% in sales, PlayStation 5 remains the second best-selling console in Europe, immediately behind the unstoppable Nintendian success of the Switch console family. Sony can also rejoice in the higher PS5 revenues in the US in 2022 reported by the latest NPD analysis.

The semiconductor crisis, however, also affected sales of accessories, with a 4.2% drop in turnover generated by the sale of peripherals and accessories such as controllers and headsets.

As for the “health” of the European videogame market as a whole, GSD confirms that 76.1 million video games were sold in the first part of 2022, with an increase of 13.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The ranking of the best-selling games in Europe is dominated by Elden Ring and Pokemon Arceus Legends, with FIFA 22 acting as the “third wheel”, especially in countries such as Spain and Italy, where EA Sports football was the most purchased game in the first half of 2022.
