Samsung has come up with a solution to increase the efficiency of the high refresh rate displays of electronic devices. The ways to achieve the goal have already been identified, so much so that the company has delivered the patent to the archives of the Korean authorities, that for the same screen and maximum update frequency, consumption can drop (we will see a lot or little) it is intuitive.

It will be necessary to understand if the technology needs time to clear any hardware or software obstacles, and above all, if it has costs compatible with the budgets of the target products, especially smartphones but also tablets and companies.

The idea that led Samsung Display engineers to the patent is simple. Why update the whole screen 120 times per second (120 Hz) when in some circumstances the frequency could be differentiated by areas?

In the patent, in fact, the technicians explain that certain areas of the display could be updated to 120 Hz (or more) and others to 30 Hz (or less), reaching the same result as existing technologies but using fewer resources and, therefore, less energy.

With the same final result, the autonomy would benefit, but it will be necessary to understand how much more work will weigh on the software to establish tens, hundreds of times per second which portion of the screen should go more and which one can update at a lower rate.

And it will also be necessary to understand if it will be possible to “divide” into zones with the current LTPO OLED technology, which already allows you to dynamically vary the refresh rate depending on the activity carried out, typically between 1 and 120 Hz, or technology will be needed. unpublished that could also have higher production costs.

In short, there are still several aspects of chiaroscuro, but it is certain that Samsung has the technology in the cellar to give a further impetus to the perfection of portable devices – the patents are there to prove it – and it is probably even more certain that, as a leading industrial as it is, Samsung’s Display division has all the know-how necessary to bring the novelty to its debut.

Costs and benefits will have to be weighed up. It is unlikely that we will see the news in this sense on the Galaxy S23, but being a solution that is less complicated than others intercepted in the past, it is possible that, with the right joints, it can be seen at work in a relatively short time.
