EU is considering a new antitrust department

According to the latest report, the European Commission is considering the establishment of a new board of directors, which may be led by two senior antitrust officials to enforce tough new rules. Limit the power of big tech companies.

There have been concerns that EU competition regulators may struggle to get tech giants such as Alphabet’s Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft to comply with the Digital Markets Act. The creation of a new board could ease that concern.

The landmark regulation was reached in March this year and will take effect next year. They would ban these companies from prioritizing their own products, forcing app developers to use their payment systems, and leveraging user data to power competing services.

The new board of the European Commission’s powerful antitrust division is likely to be led by Alberto Bacchiega, information, communications and media chief, who is responsible for antitrust and mergers and acquisitions cases involving the tech, media and consumer electronics industries, one of the people said.

Bacchiega may also be assisted by Thomas Kramler, director of the e-commerce and data economy antitrust cases unit, which is currently leading investigations into Apple and Amazon, the person said.

A third-party source said the two officials had been in touch with officials at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, which will jointly enforce the Digital Markets Act.

Because Bacchiega and Kramle were on vacation, they could not be reached for comment. The European Commission said it is organizing internally so that the Digital Markets Act can be effectively implemented.

“The implementation of the Digital Markets Act is estimated to require around 80 staff, which will be redeployed internally depending on the situation, ” a spokesman said. “In-house deployment will be based on the expertise of all Directorates and related services and ensure that the relevant Directorates and services are properly staffed,” she said.
