Microsoft: Activision Blizzard’s games are nothing unique

Microsoft has told New Zealand regulators that there is “nothing unique” about Activision Blizzard’s games, the latest attempt by Microsoft to get a deal approved. In a filing to the Commerce Acquisition and Licensing Commerce Commission, Microsoft said the gaming giant doesn’t make any “must have” games and should therefore be allowed to acquire them.

Microsoft’s remarks were made to allay concerns that its acquisition of Activision Blizzard would threaten the gaming industry and raise competition issues in the market. Even without Activision Blizzard’s games, Microsoft says its rivals are doing just fine and are still able to compete in a “vibrant” gaming market.

Not responding to concerns about a monopoly in the industry, the document reads: “The vast majority of games are developed and published by companies other than (Activision Blizzard), such as Sony, Nintendo, EA and Take-Two”,

The statement continued: “Specifically, as far as Activision Blizzard’s games are concerned, there is nothing unique about the games developed and published by them. For competing PC and console game distributors, there is no ‘must have’ ‘The problem.”

These words from Microsoft may sound harsh, but it’s unlikely to be referring to the quality of Activision Blizzard games. Rather, it appears to be a statement to regulators who don’t understand the gaming market and need to let them know that Activision Blizzard doesn’t have a monopoly on a particular type of game.
