The upcoming Google Pixel update coming tonight

According to the latest report, Google will roll out a new Android update, which mainly fixes bugs and patches security update. But a functional update for the Pixel smartphones is also expected and it cannot be ruled out that the final version of Android will be released tonight. We round up what Pixel users can look forward to today.

When is the update coming?

Google always releases the Android security update on the first Monday of the month, which is immediately rolled out to all supported Pixel smartphones over the course of the following hours and days. Because today’s August 1st falls on a Monday, Pixel users don’t have to wait this time and will receive the update on the first day of the new month.

Which Pixel phones will get the update?

The security update will be rolled out for all fourth to sixth-generation Pixel smartphones. The Pixel 3a was launched in May 2019 and has therefore not been supported since May 2022. Nevertheless, Google announced in May that it would add a final update in July. But July is over and the update didn’t come, so it was probably postponed to August. This extends the good feeling for remaining Pixel 3a users of still owning a current smartphone. But after that, it’s really over…

You can find an overview of the update guarantee for Pixel smartphones in detail in this article. Pixel 4 owners should also slowly get used to the fact that the monthly updates won’t last forever. After the August update, two more will follow and then the first fourth-generation smartphones will also be counted as obsolete (minus a possible extension).

What updates can be expected?

The August 1st update will definitely include the Android security update as well as a separate Pixel update for all Pixel smartphones that are still supported. This consists of numerous bug fixes each month, and August will be no exception. It is difficult to say in advance whether you will also add functionality. It is quite possible that you will skip that this month and have something else, very interesting, in your luggage:

Is Android 13 coming?

There is a good chance that Google will release the final version of Android 13 on Monday. A few days ago there was one last release candidate and it would make sense to combine them. However, you should note that since last year “publish” on Android no longer means “rollout”. Because there is no Android QPR beta this time, it is expected that Android 13 will not be rolled out on the Pixel smartphones until the beginning of September as a feature drop replacement. However, this is only speculation, because Google does not comment on the rollout plans in advance.

Samsung was faster

Finally, this shouldn’t be ignored either: Samsung had already provided the first smartphones with the July update on Thursday, July 28, leaving Google far behind once again. This is possible because Google gives the updates a date from the beginning of the month, but releases the basic improvements to smartphone manufacturers a good two weeks in advance.
