Google try out large favicons and site names in mobile search

Three years ago, Google tried to modify mobile search results by attaching a favicon to them and later attempted to the desktop but was unsuccessful. For now, Google performs testing on a mobile search change they use large favicons and provides more prominence to site names.

Since the icons are large, they are eye-catching and available in google Discover on Android. As per the content feed, it decides how favicons and sites look at the bottom of cards after cover images and headlines.

This new look for mobile search is not that much attractive because of the low resolution and a large number of favicons on the website, nowadays phone screens are also sharp.

The modification is still in the testing phase for the past weeks but is not released publicly yet, and the Discover tweak is also limited. In 2020 Google tried to plan favicons for desktop Search results. The design was not appreciated well so it resulted in the company driving back.

For a while, the company said favicons were “well received by users on mobile screens” given that it “helps people more quickly see where information is coming from”. It also helps to get data as per your search this is only possible by large size.
