Microsoft releases more RAM for Xbox Series S games

Microsoft currently has two very different game consoles on the market. The flagship is the Xbox Series X, which competes directly with the PlayStation 5. This console is designed for 4K gaming. Then there is the Xbox Series S.

Here, Microsoft not only dispenses with the optical drive but has also significantly reduced the GPU performance and reduced RAM. Apparently, the latter always annoys developers because it makes it difficult to optimize their titles for the Xbox Series S. Now Microsoft is giving in with a new Developer SDK.

According to Microsoft, the new SDK frees up several hundred megabytes of memory for game developers. Basically, the Xbox Series S uses 10 GB of RAM. However, developers can only access 8 GB, since 2 GB are reserved for the operating system and associated processes. In the background, however, the Redmond company was apparently able to optimize a little, so that additional RAM is available for the game developers.

According to Microsoft, the performance in games could benefit from this if the RAM has been the bottleneck so far. As a supplement: Unlike the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S is only designed for 1440p or 1080p gaming. However, it retains tricks like ray tracing and also supports 120 fps.

Ultimately, the Xbox Series S can be seen as a cheaper entry-level platform that can make sense for casual gamers or in conjunction with the Xbox Game Pass.
