Google TV: Virtual ban for devices with limited memory

Google is a well-known source of TV OS segment. For example, requires the use of a new Android version and better hardware for new features. It is currently still common that even the more expensive TV sticks with Android TV OS often only have 8 GB of memory on board. This may often be sufficient, but it is actually no longer up-to-date. Especially in times when there are more and more streaming apps. Google releases new minimum requirements.

Google TV requires better basic equipment for new features

Earlier this week we told you that some new features are planned for Android TV and Google TV. Although in the future there should actually only be Google TV as an interface. It is said that three points will be decisive in the future.

This includes Bluetooth 5.0, but also the newer Android 13 and a minimum memory of 16 GB. Google could have taken the lead here but has only equipped its own Chromecast with Google TV with 8 GB. A major point of criticism from the start.

Google could force better hardware

However, the Protocol report does not indicate whether Google is enforcing these requirements for new devices. It could well be that these are just wishes and recommendations, but not a must.
Google can usually put pressure on manufacturers if they want to ship their devices with Google services. Contracts are necessary for this and Google can specify various factors in them.
