[Update: Official Response] Android 13 does not allow you to rollback on Android 12

August 17/2022

Google officially stated on this matter and say the bootloader version used previously had a security vulnerability, as was first spotted by security researcher @flawedworld (and highlighted by Mishaal Rahman).

Recently, Google rolled out an August 2022 security patch update for the Pixel 4 series, Pixel 5 series and the Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, and Pixel 6 Pro along with the Stable Android 13 update. Google also provides you with Factory Images and OTAs to download this update on your device.

A little note for users of a Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro or Pixel 6a. Android 13 has just been released and is available to download for supported Pixel devices. But: the current devices, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6a, cannot go back to Android 12 after an update to Android 13. Certainly only a very niche problem, but one that should not go unmentioned. Google writes as follows:

Warning: The Android 13 update for the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6a includes a bootloader update that increases the anti-rollback version. After flashing an Android 13 build on these devices, you will not be able to flash older Android 12 builds.
