iPhone’s latest patent shows Apple is considering ceramic material

The mainstream materials of smartphone back cover include plastic, glass, and plain leather, and a small number of high-end flagships use ceramics, such as Xiaomi MIX 4, OPPO Find X5 Pro and so on.

Now there are signs that Apple is investigating ceramic materials, and the possibility of a ceramic back cover on the future iPhone is not ruled out. Today, according to Forbes, an Apple patent shows a zirconia ceramic material that could be used in future watch models. What’s more exciting is that it can also be used for the iPhone.

The patent is called an “electronic device with textured zirconia-based assembly” and promises a matte finish. Apple says it can provide a “matte look” to the exterior surfaces of electronic devices, and while it doesn’t give full details on the material, it specifies that “the zirconia-based component is made of ceramic.”

It is reported that zirconia material has excellent physical and chemical properties such as high hardness, high strength, high toughness, extremely high wear resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, and has been widely used in the field of ceramics.

Taking Xiaomi MIX 4 as an example, the machine uses high-purity nano-zirconia composite material to make a ceramic body. Compared with traditional ceramic materials, the finished product made of this composite material is 30% lighter in weight, which not only retains the ceramic texture, Reduced the weight of the fuselage again.

At present, ceramics are only used by a small number of high-end flagships. If Apple uses ceramic materials, it will most likely be applied to the Pro series version of the iPhone.
