For the past months, everyone waiting for the cheapest version of Chromecast with Google TV, and now recently the update brought new software details, specs, and even the apparent “Chromecast HD” branding. As per the Kuba Wojciechowski talk about the full software development for Google’s new Chromecast and several details about the device. The key point is the name of this device is known as “Chromecast HD” within the code.
Features expected from the new Chromecast HD with Google TV
- This new device has a better appearance as per the spec sheet. It also searches with the Amlogic S805X2 chipset. This chip will support AV1 decoding which doesn’t present in the existing Chromecast and the chipset is still a large downgrade from the 4K model.
- The range of video output of this is 1080p but doesn’t have the same power as the S905X3 in the Chromecast HD with Google TV.
- The performance is lesser due to 1.5GB of RAM on the device which is less than the 4K model.
- The software is based on Android 12, which is the first Google TV 12 streamer. Original Chromecast is still based on Android 10.
Google makes this device cheaper because they don’t want to expect a result like the “premium” 4K model. This device ships with the support for virtual A/B seamless updates and compression. Through this user gets the updates frequently as compared to the original Chromecast with Google TV. The updates don’t affect the user’s storage they go straight to partitions. The size of RAM 1.5GB will be a bottleneck for the future Android version because from Android 13 the memory size rises to 2GB.
From the other update of Kyle Bradshaw, this device has just passed through the Bluetooth SIG, dubbed simply “Google Chromecast.” The expected cost for this new device is $30.
