In terms of modem performance, how does the Google Tensor G2 stack up? To find out, they compared the signal strength and speed of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 side by side.

Google uses an Exynos 5300g modem in its brand-new Tensor G2 chipset on the Pixel 7. Anecdotal evidence from the past few months suggests that this upgrade has significantly increased signal strength and speed. The majority of early buyers and reviewers, including ourselves, have found that the Pixel 7 series is easier to connect to a network, has respectable speeds, and uses less power than the modem on the original Tensor chip in the Pixel 6 series.

Testing of Pixel 7’s modem

To conduct this comparison, they averaged the results of three consecutive speed tests conducted on both devices in the same locations using the Ookla Speedtest. They chose not to use mmWave 5G because it was not available in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, or the other areas we tested. Instead, we used Sub6 5G and LTE networks because that is all AT&T offers in those areas.

Along with the Pixels, we also brought a Galaxy Z Fold 4 with a Qualcomm modem and the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 to test, but the results of the speed test didn’t include it. Why? All of our speed tests produced highly erratic results for some reason on our device. After we reset the network settings, this partially resolved itself. However, to maintain consistency, we have excluded the Fold from the speed tests that follow.

In speed tests Pixel 7 faster?

The Pixel 7 was a significant step ahead of the Pixel 6 with Tensor. This was in a place that wasn’t particularly rural and wasn’t close to any “downtown” areas either.

The second location was a public park in High Point, North Carolina, about 20 miles from Winston-Salem. It was close to some network towers, but he doesn’t sure if they were AT&T towers directly, but both phones reported maximum signal strength there. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 performed roughly the same here.

The user’s location was in downtown Winston-Salem, where there is a strong signal but speeds are typically below 50Mbps. The difference between the two Pixels was only 3-5Mbps, but when he looked at the results from the three tests, the Pixel 7 was more consistent.

He finally moved the two phones to a more remote area. The fact that this final location, a park in Kernersville, North Carolina, 20 miles from Winston-Salem, has a weak signal from all carriers was purposefully chosen. On both devices, he experienced speeds of less than 5 Mbps on average and anywhere from one to two bars of 5G. The majority of tests only recorded 1Mbps. While his Fold 4 was unable to even finish the speed test, the Pixel 7 pulled a little more than the Pixel 6. Due to a lack of signal strength, he was unable to complete the usual three tests on each, but the tests he was able to complete showed a clear trend that the Pixel 7 was having more success keeping and using its connection.

Perhaps the most significant of the three tests is this one. The user never had much trouble keeping my connection in well-covered areas with the Pixel 6. Before phones from Samsung and others, he always felt like his phone was having trouble in more rural areas and could see it drop a connection. He noticed a clear increase with Pixel 7, and this test helped me put some actual numbers behind it.

Do users expect that Pixel 7 get better signal reception?

Comparing the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with the Pixel 6, and Pixel 7, even though a network reset improved my Fold’s performance (it was still having issues), he discovered that the outcomes were essential as he had anticipated. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 was the best of the bunch, typically having the best connection in any given location. The Pixel 7 was about as good as that one, but it was a little more often in the red. In addition, the Pixel 6 typically possessed the weakest connection of the three. The following is an excerpt from over 1,000 samples taken while driving approximately 15 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem to Wake Forest University. These samples were taken side by side.

Encounters will constantly fluctuate by your region and your transporter, we’ll be hoping to refresh these outcomes with testing on Verizon or potentially T-Portable assuming that the open door emerges, however, there is a reasonable pattern he saw in these next to each other examinations. The Pixel 7 is a significant advancement.

Lastly, speed tests are almost always better, and signal strength is usually at least marginally stronger. The numbers indicate that Samsung, Google’s partner, increased its efforts this time.
