Google tweaks and simplifies its Photos app’s backup terminology

Google recently updated two terms related to the process in the Google Photos mobile and web apps as well as the support documentation to make backups even simpler. The backup section was previously called “Backup & Sync” but after the Google Photos update it is now simply called “Backup”. It’s very interesting how “sync” is considered a given with modern technology and cloud backup.

In the same menu, “Upload size” has been renamed to “Backup quality”, with “Original quality” and “Storage saver” unchanged.

  • The changes listed below have now been rolled out for all users.
The changes listed below have now been rolled out to all users:
  • Backup & sync, the setting to enable or disable the automatic backup of your photos and videos to your Google account has been renamed to Backup.
  • Currently, users have the choice to store their photos and videos in ‘Original quality’ or ‘Storage saver’. This was called Upload size in the Google Photos app and on photos.google.com. We’ve renamed this to Backup quality so you can easily find, and adjust if you need, how your photos and videos are stored in Google Photos.
