Google Watch apps updated for Wear OS 3 and Google Wallet available for 60 countries

The number of countries where Google Wallet is available on Wear OS has increased to 60 thanks to the app’s continued expansion. The newest additions are listed below. In a brief post earlier today, Google confirmed that Wallet support is being implemented in a few new nations, focusing particularly on Kuwait, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Wear OS smartwatch owners in 62 countries now have access to these and other features.

Notably, Google confirmed in August 2022 that this represented an increase from 45 nations. We can directly compare the list to determine how many have been added since Google last provided a formal update.

The following are additions that have been made since August:

Additionally, Google expects app developers to keep the app state:

  • Preserve user or app state when leaving the foreground and prevent accidental data loss due to back-navigation and other state changes.
  • When your app is resumed from the launcher or recent app switcher within minutes of last use, then restore the app state as close as possible to its previous state.

In terms of Visual quality, developers must “display the time of day clearly at the top of the app home screen and any ongoing activity screens,” while all apps and Tiles must use a black background. Applications must also sport splash screens.

To make apps more accessible, there is now a “minimum font size of 12sp for essential text and 10sp for non-essential text.” Additionally, apps “must conform to the font size set by the user in System Settings.”

Apps must target Wear OS 3’s Android 11 (API level 30) under Performance and functionality. Additionally, there are requirements for app stability and Play Store listings.

Starting on August 31, 2023, these new requirements, which include targeting Android 11, will take effect.

Apps that target lower levels will stop being discoverable to all Google Play users whose devices run Android OS versions newer than the app’s target API level from August 31, 2023.
