ChatGPT-like generative AI features are being added to Gmail, Google Docs, and other services

Google Workspace has announced the release of its first wave of AI products and capabilities, including generative AI comparable to ChatGPT that is integrated directly into Google Documents. Google announced the first major wave of AI enhancements for its Workspace family of products this morning on The Keyword.

On the consumer side, the most intriguing news is that ChatGPT-like generative AI will be included in Google Documents and Gmail. With Google Docs, this takes the form of producing outlines for new documents to assist the user in getting started. Google pitches this as utilizing AI to create “the first draught,” and offers an example (below) of Docs developing an outline for a job description based on a very quick prompt, similar to what ChatGPT can do, though Google’s version obviously lives immediately within the word processor.

Google also indicates that future AI improvements to Docs would include the ability to use AI to “brainstorm, proofread, compose, and revise” papers. Aside from Documents, Google is also revealing new AI features for Gmail. Gmail will be able to take a quick email and expand it, as well as change the tone of the email to a more official tone, going beyond the present Smart Reply and Smart Compose functions. The AI can also reduce longer passages, divide the text into bullet lists, or construct a longer document based on a short suggestion.

Google outlines how developers may leverage this AI in another post, and the “PaLM” API will be available soon. Google is also extending PaLM to the Cloud, with Vertex AI and App Builder using generative AI.

One of Google’s obvious messages throughout this release is that AI isn’t a replacement for human writing, stating that “AI is no alternative for real people’s originality, creativity, and smarts.” Google also says it is developing these features to “keep the user in control.”

AI technologies in Google Documents and Gmail will be available to Trusted Testers this month before being made available to the entire public later. Google previews how the AI can be utilised and what other items it will appear in in the video below. One example is Slides, which contains capability for generative AI for photos, with another in Google Meet making notes from a video session.
