India mandates FM Radio in smartphones

Indian government issues advisory to not disable FM radio (Frequency Modulation) on mobile phones by default. Phones without FM radio should make efforts to provide the service

FM Radios operate in bands that have high bandwidth and low frequency, so they are able to reach areas where even mobile connectivity is difficult.

The advisory was issued after the IT ministry observed that there was a “drastic fall” in the FM tuners feature, which impacted the ability of the poor to get free FM radio services.

It also affects the government’s ability to send out real-time information during emergencies, disasters, and calamities to the public early.
