Musk announced in January that Tesla would no longer require Autopilot users to apply resistance to the steering wheel. @WholeMarsBlog asked Musk in a tweet if users of FSD Beta who have driven more than 10,000 miles could have the option to disable the irritating steering wheel nag. The initial response from Musk was, “Agreed, update coming in January.”

Tesla appears to have decided to gradually reduce the steering wheel nag since then. The period during which the vehicle checks for active participation has changed over time, but it currently ranges from 30 to 60 seconds, which occasionally causes drivers to become irritated.

The investigation, which also aims to determine whether drivers are paying attention when using Autopilot, has been emphasized by Ann Carlson, the acting head of the NHTSA. Carlson disclosed in January that Tesla had been contacted by the NHTSA regarding the planned removal of the steering wheel nag.
