Google Fast Pair Service v3.2 adds support for Smart Audio Source Switching

According to the latest report, version 3.2 of the Google Fast Pair Service (GFPS) specification adds support for Smart Audio Source Switching (SASS). Google announced audio switching back in July 2022, but the documentation and accompanying Nearby library only recently went live.

Audio switching intelligently transitions headphone audio based on user activity and prioritized events. For example, if you’re watching a video on a tablet & receive a notification on your phone, the audio won’t switch. But if you get a phone call, it will.

In Google’s July blog post, they said that audio switching would roll out first on the Pixel Buds Pro followed by “select Sony and JBL headphones in the coming weeks.” They also said that they have “plans to expand to more of your favorite platforms and devices over time.”

The latest release of the Nearby SDK for embedded systems (Embedded v1.1.0-RC1) supports the GFPS v3.2 spec and SASS. We believe this release + the documentation are how SASS will expand support beyond Android.

The page that documents how SASS works mentions what Audio Switch Providers (ie. headphones) need to adhere to in order to achieve smart switching. Firmware updates will definitely be needed from what it seems.
