Apple’s new patent: iPhone screen refresh rate can be doubled to 240Hz

The United States Patent and Trademark Office published a new Apple patent describing a multiple refresh rate function for the iPhone display.

After enabling the iPhone’s high refresh mode, the phone screen will support updating content at a 2x, 3x, or even 4x native refresh rate. For example, an iPhone with a 60Hz display will be able to automatically increase its variable refresh rate to 120Hz, 180Hz, or 240Hz.

According to the patent, although the current main application device for this technology will be the iPhone, as time goes by, the present invention will be extended to other devices, such as the iPad, Apple Watch, glasses, head-mounted displays, TVs, cars, etc.

The following is an Apple patent map. Fig. 2 is a schematic diagram of an illustrative display; Fig. 3 is a state diagram showing how a display of the type shown in Fig. 2 is installed. The system shown in Figure 2 can operate in both native refresh rate mode and high refresh rate mode.
