YouTuber creates world’s first ARM iMac with M1 Mac mini parts ahead of Apple

According to the 9to5 Mac reported, while we are still expecting Apple to release the first Apple Silicon iMac sometime this year, YouTube blogger Luke Miani has already done it himself. In a new video, Miani shows how he used the iMac case and M1 Mac mini to create “the world’s first DIY Apple Silicon iMac”.

Using the iFixit teardown guide, Miani first took apart a 2011 27-inch iMac model. Please note that this is the model before the redesign, so there is no tapered design on the side. Then, he did some research and found a conversion board that allows you to turn your iMac into an HDMI display.

When this process is completed, the 2011 iMac has basically become an Apple cinema display, but Miani has not yet completed his pursuit of creating an all-in-one iMac with an Apple Silicon chip inside. So he removed the internal organs of the M1 Mac mini and found a suitable installation location inside the 27-inch iMac.

After installing the Mac mini components into the iMac, the process is basically complete. Miani created the “world’s first” all-in-one Apple Silicon iMac. Although this is impressive, there are some caveats. Miani stated:

“The first problem is that when I first turned it on, the Magic mouse and keyboard could hardly be connected, and the Wi-Fi speed was super slow. The reason is that the Mac mini, like most Macs, has three antennas connected, and one of the antennas is It’s on the small metal base plate that we removed when we disassembled the Mac mini. Therefore, its three antennas become two when placed in the iMac metal case, which will definitely be painful.”

In order to solve this problem, Miani re-used a metal antenna strap in the original iMac case, giving it full-speed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, another problem is that there is no advanced interface. This means that this M1 iMac does not have USB-C or Thunderbolt connectivity.

More importantly, this video can serve as a pretty impressive proof of concept. As Miani pointed out in the video, one of the most interesting things is that after installing the Mac mini components, there is still a lot of empty space inside the iMac, and the M1 chip used is faster than the Intel i7 chip on the original iMac.
