Google Chrome 90 Beta release includes new AV1 encoding support

Following the Google Chrome 89 browser released last week, the Chrome 90 browser is now launched in the form of a beta version, bringing the aforementioned AV1 encoding support for WebRTC, which is used for web browsing focused on real-time video conferences. AV1 encoding capability is provided in the device.

Although the performance of the current AOMedia reference encoder is still quite low, this is a step towards improving WebRTC support.

Google pointed out in the Chrome 90 Beta announcement that AV1 provides better compression efficiency, better results for very low bandwidth networks (30kbps and below), and provides better screen sharing than VP9 and other codecs effectiveness.

The Chrome 90 beta also conducted new experiments around MediaStreamTrack pluggable stream, getCurrentBrowsingContextMedia, WebAssembly exception handling and WebXR AR light estimation.

Chrome 90 is also studying new features for developers, such as CSS vertical and horizontal interpolation, custom state pseudo-classes, and “overflow: clip” CSS property support.
