macOS malware is growing rapidly in 2020 but is only a small part of Windows threats

9to5Mac reported that: A study of new malware discovered in the wild last year showed that the threat landscape of macOS has undergone tremendous changes, an increase of almost 1,100% from 2019. This survey jointly conducted by Atlas and AV-Test shows that Mac users face an average of 1,847 new threats per day. However, combined with the context, it can be seen that compared with the Windows platform of the same period, its number is still less than 1% of the total threat.

The survey involved 67,274,273 new malware on the Mac platform, which is the first major outbreak since 2019 (+1092%). In comparison, the total number of new Mac malware discovered in the survey last year was only 55,556, in 2018 it was 92,570, in 2017 it was 28,949, and in 2016 it was only 5,208.

Atlas said that one of the main factors contributing to the surge in the number of macOS malware in 2020 is that the engineering of new malware has become easier than ever. Nowadays, many hackers do not need too advanced programming skills, and can even directly purchase ready-made codes, and then customize new malware with one click. Interestingly, from the beginning of 2021 (mid-March), the number of new malware added to macOS has not changed much (only 2474).

As for the Windows platform, the study found that more than 91 million new threats have been added in 2020, which is more than 135 times that of macOS. On average, there are nearly 250,000 new Windows malware every day. Even before the end of the first quarter of 2021, more than 33 million new malware threats have been encountered on the Windows platform.
