Microsoft Edge browser restores DNS over HTTPS function to enhance security and privacy

Microsoft recently restored the DNS over HTTPS function (hereinafter referred to as DoH) for all versions of Edge browsers. In February 2021, because turning on this feature will affect browser performance, Microsoft temporarily closed Edge’s DoH feature.

Now, this feature has been restored in the official, Canary, and Dev versions of the Edge browser. The performance problem has been resolved, which is beneficial Protect user privacy and prevent DNS hijacking.

Before this function is enabled, when a user visits an HTTPS website, DNS requests are sent in plain text. Therefore, once some sensitive sites or internal websites are visited, a third party can obtain the requested website URL through packet capture.

The second problem with not enabling the encryption function is that a third party in the middle of the link can hijack and tamper with DNS requests and connect to phishing websites, advertising websites, etc., which is very dangerous.

After enabling the DoH function, the request is encrypted and transmitted through HTTPS, which increases security and protects user privacy. Currently entering the settings of the latest version of the Edge browser, you can see this option by opening the “Privacy, Search, and Service” page. In addition, users can customize the DNS provider.
