Samsung accounts for half of global revenue, BOE second

Recently, Strategy Analytics released the 2020 smartphone display panel market report. Data show that the total revenue of the global smartphone display panel market in 2020 will reach 43 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 7%.

According to report data, in 2020, Samsung Display will lead the smartphone display panel market with a 50% revenue share, BOE will rank second with a 15% revenue share, and LG Display will occupy 8%, ranking third.

Driven by the expansion of the supply chain of major smartphone suppliers, OLED display technology will increase shipments of OLED panels to customers by 2020. Among them, in 2020, the top three display panel suppliers accounted for nearly 73% of the revenue share in the global smartphone display panel market.

Strategy Analytics analysts said that strong seasonal demand and 5G momentum have promoted the growth of the smartphone display panel market. The release of new devices based on Flexible OLED and Rigid OLED display panels will contribute to the revenue growth of the smartphone OLED panel market in 2020.

Among them, Samsung Display won a record level of smartphone panel revenue due to its strong design of key equipment. With the increase in OLED demand, Samsung will also face increasingly fierce competitive pressure from panel suppliers such as LG Display, BOE, Visionox and TCL CSOT.

It is reported that South Korean display manufacturers have always been leaders in flexible OLED panels. Samsung Display is the first manufacturer in the industry to develop flexible OLEDs, and in 2013 it achieved commercialization for the first time through Samsung Electronics’ smartphones. LG Display successfully achieved mass production of flexible OLEDs in 2017.

In 2020, BOE will ship nearly one million flexible folding OLED products, and its global shipments are second only to Samsung. At present, in addition to flexible folding products, BOE is also expanding new forms of products with mass production capabilities such as curling. With the current market demand for new forms of display products such as folding and curling continues to heat up, BOE’s flexible folding product shipments are expected to continue to grow rapidly.

And recently there is news that BOE may provide its OLED panels for Samsung’s smartphones. As the biggest competitor of Samsung Display, such as BOE’s supply of OLED displays for Samsung Electronics, it will have a significant impact on the Korean display industry.

For the global panel market in 2021, Strategy Analytics predicts that driven by 5G and high-end display technologies, the procurement of display panels through smartphone OEM manufacturers will continue to stabilize until 2021. At the same time, Strategy Analytics said that in the smartphone display panel market, the share of LCD displays will lag behind OLED displays.
