Russia’s new iPhone setup process now includes a list of apps recommended for government approval

According to the Macrumors, a few weeks after Apple agreed to allow Russia to show government-approved suggested apps to iPhone users in the country, Russian users saw a list of app suggestions when setting up new devices.

As Khaos Tian pointed out on Twitter, Russian users will see an App Store section during the initial setup of the iPhone, which contains apps such as Yandex browser, Yandex map, ICQ, and VK. According to Russian legal requirements, here are some apps from Russian developers that you can download. The text that pops up is similar to the App Store‌ “Today” browsing card.

After going through the standard iPhone setting procedures, such as setting light/dark mode, turning on True Tone, and adjusting the display zoom, Russian users will be directed to a list of apps that can be downloaded. Downloading the application is optional, not required, and the application will not be installed automatically.

Apple agreed to display the application list in order to comply with a law enacted by the Russian Ministry of Digital Affairs. The law requires that all devices on Russian sales must be pre-installed software, including smartphones, tablets, desktops and smart TV.

Apple said on March 16th that it will provide application suggestions starting from April 1. In addition to the applications listed during setup, Apple may also add a new section in the App Store to specifically promote Russian applications.
