Apple expands Apple Arcade game catalog classic App Store games on shelves

Apple announced the expansion of its subscription game service Apple Arcade. In addition to the exclusive release of the game, the company also added two new categories-“Timeless Classics” and “App Store Greats”.

In the “App Store Greats” category, you can find some well-known iPhone games released in the past decade, such as Threes+, Mini Metro+, Monument Valley+, Fruit Ninja Classic+, Cut the Rope Remastered, and Badland+.

This is an interesting move because so far, Apple has been focusing on providing exclusive games in its gaming services. Interestingly, some Apple Arcade games are sequels of popular App Store games-for example, I put “Mini Highway” and “Mini Rayman” into this category.

But Apple is changing its position, choosing to bring App Store games back to its game catalog. Some of these games are still available on the App Store, while others have become incompatible with modern iOS versions due to framework and hardware updates. For example, 64-bit processors have made many games incompatible.

As always, Apple is not just putting free games behind paywalls. These are all new downloads on the App Store, and players can get the complete game without any ads or in-app purchases. In addition to the old App Store games, Apple has also added “Timeless Classics” games.

This is a selection of board games and classic puzzle games, included in the Apple Arcade subscription, including Backgammon+, Chess Game and Learning+, Good Sudoku+, Tiny Crossword+, etc. These games should be absolutely helpful in reducing player churn. There is no shortage of people who repeatedly pay Apple Store subscription fees just to continue using the same application just to play a few games of chess.

In total, Apple will release 32 old games today, so that there are more than 180 games in the Apple Arcade store catalog. Apple initially launched the service in September 2019. Users can download Apple Arcade games for $4.99 a month, and there are no additional in-app purchases. These games can be used on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and macOS. A single Apple Arcade subscription can allow up to 6 family members to play. You can also use Apple One subscription to enter Apple Arcade.

Apple has been heavily betting on subscription services, such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Fitness+ and Apple News+. Although some of these services are very successful, such as Apple Music, the company is still adding more and more content to other services to prove to users that they should subscribe for a long time. Today’s Apple Arcade update is considered to be of considerable help to its game subscription service.
