Apple tvOS 14.5 beta code hints that the new Apple TV will support 120Hz

According to the 9to5Mac found support for 120Hz in the tvOS 14.5 beta code. However, due to hardware limitations, this is not possible on the current generation of Apple TV. In the latest beta version, the PineBoard of tvOS has added multiple references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz”.

PineBoard is the internal name for controlling the Apple TV interface system, similar to SpringBoard on iPhone and iPad. This information shows that Apple has at least tested the 120Hz mode of Apple TV internally.

It should be noted that even if there is a software update, the current Apple TV 4K does not support 120Hz. Because this generation of Apple TV is equipped with an HDMI 2.0 interface, it limits the 4K resolution to 60Hz. If you want to enable 4K 120Hz mode, you need an HDMI 2.1 port.

9to5Mac pointed out that as early as 2019, some sources revealed that an Apple TV equipped with HDMI 2.1 interface is under development. More information about this model appeared in the previously released tvOS 13.4 betas, but Apple has never introduced this product. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, an upgraded version of Apple TV will be launched in 2021.
