TikTok creators will soon be able to add automatically generated subtitles to their videos. During the short video production process, the option to add automatic subtitles will appear on the editing page after the video is uploaded or recorded. TikTok said that the feature will first provide American English and Japanese, but it plans to add support for more languages ”in the coming months.”
The TikTok platform adds this feature to make it easier for deaf and hearing-impaired viewers to watch TikTok videos. However, a TikTok dialog box also stated that this feature is useful for anyone watching the video, “especially when it is difficult or inconvenient for them to listen to the audio.” Creators can edit subtitles after they are automatically generated to correct errors, and viewers can turn off subtitles through the subtitle button on the share panel.
With the continuous improvement of the automatic voice transcription feature, more and more services are adding it to the software to make the content easier to understand. Last month, Google built the feature into the Chrome browser, allowing it to generate subtitles for audio played through the browser.

The company’s real-time subtitle system is also available as a system-wide function to selected Android devices. Video chat services such as Zoom and Google Meet can automatically generate subtitles during a call, and Instagram seems to be testing similar features for its videos.
TikTok’s automatic subtitles are just its latest accessibility feature. The app also warns creators of videos that may cause photosensitive epilepsy and provides viewers with filters to avoid these videos. TikTok also added a text-to-speech feature at the end of last year.
