Microsoft introduced new Edge security feature

The Edge browser on Windows 10 is constantly being given new features. Earlier today, Microsoft introduced a new security feature for some Edge users, allowing users to perform mandatory authentication before automatically filling in passwords. Like every other browser, Microsoft Edge also comes with a good password management function, which allows you to store and automatically fill in passwords.

In the Canary channel version, Microsoft is testing a new optional feature that will require successful user authentication before the password is automatically filled. After enabling the new feature, Microsoft will not automatically fill in the password saved to the browser but will require you to use the Windows Hello security feature for authentication.

If you have a device that does not support Windows Hello, you can still enable this feature in Microsoft Edge by going to the “Profile” page in your browser and selecting the password option. Here, click the “Require Authentication” switch under the “Login” section to use the Windows Hello-based PIN code.

Once this feature is enabled, Microsoft Edge will pop up a Windows Hello prompt every time you try to use the browser’s auto-fill feature to enter the stored password. When you select the first option “Always”, Windows Hello in the prompt will ask you to enter a PIN code for all password boxes. If you choose the second option, you can automatically fill in the password without authentication within one minute. When the third option is selected, verification is required for each session.

Microsoft hopes to use this feature to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the saved passwords. This feature is particularly useful if you do not use a third-party password manager. Although PIN codes are supported, other Windows Hello methods such as biometric credentials are still the safest way to prevent unauthorized access to stored passwords.
