Samsung SmartTag+ with UWB and AR tracking items will be available on April 16

Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag Plus is an upgraded version of the company’s Tile-like SmartTag Bluetooth tracker (released earlier this year). The release date is now clear: it will be launched on April 16 and will cost $39.99. This is $10 more expensive than the standard SmartTag price, which costs $29.99–but SmartTag Plus has a significant improvement.

It uses an ultra-wideband (UWB) radio, and when it is nearby, users can track it more accurately than standard Bluetooth settings. UWB radios actually enable a new AR mode that can help users show exactly where their missing tags are.

To use the new UWB mode, you need to use both Galaxy SmartTag Plus and Galaxy phones compatible with UWB. The current list includes Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy S21 Plus, Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 2.

However, apart from the fancy new UWB features, SmartTag Plus works the same as ordinary SmartTag, using Samsung’s huge Bluetooth network of Galaxy devices to help track lost objects. This is similar to Apple’s Find My network, which uses the iPhone and iPad to create a Bluetooth network (due to the recent expansion to third-party devices, Chipolo’s Find My compatible tracker will be available soon).

The upcoming Galaxy SmartTag Plus means that Samsung, instead of Apple’s long-rumored AirTags, will become the first major AR-compatible UWB tracking accessory to be listed. According to reports, Apple has been developing a similar UWB-based AR function for its upcoming tracker, but despite a large number of leaks and rumors, there is still no release date.
