Windows 10 taskbar now push Microsoft Edge’s PWA web application

In the latest A/B test, Microsoft is using the Windows 10 taskbar to push Chromium Edge-driven PWA web applications such as YouTube, Facebook, and Office. Microsoft’s new Edge pop-up window will appear after applying general Windows updates, or when you use other applications normally.

If your Windows 10 October 2020 update or newer version, regardless of whether there is an Edge browser icon on your taskbar, you may soon start to see a new pop-up window encouraging you to try Edge-driven PWA network application.

The pop-up notice read: “Go directly to the top website”, Microsoft explained that it will “pin your favorite website to the taskbar and quickly open the tab directly.” This change is obviously based on Microsoft Edge’s taskbar Pinning wizard, which was launched last year.

It is worth noting that even if Microsoft Edge is the default browser and the website has been pinned to the taskbar, a pop-up window will appear. And not just for users who use Google Chrome and Firefox as their default browsers.

Microsoft initially started experimenting with this reminder in 2020, and based on our own tests and reports received from users, it appears to be rolling out to more devices. The purpose of the pop-up reminder is to remind you that the new Chromium-based Edge’s Progressive Web Apps feature is mature and available. If you click the “Try” button, the Microsoft Edge taskbar Pinning Wizard will appear on the desktop, and it will suggest users to pin these sites:

  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Wikipedia
  • Reddit
  • Microsoft News

“When you launch these websites from the taskbar, they will open in Microsoft Edge,” Microsoft pointed out. Once you pin the website on the taskbar, Microsoft will display recommendations for its popular web applications, such as Bing and Office. The next screen will persuade you to try the “recommended browser settings” instead of Chrome and Firefox. “Now, let us make sure that your browser settings are what you want. We recommend using the latest Microsoft Edge to improve performance, privacy and productivity.” Microsoft pointed out.

If you close the alert by clicking the “X” icon, the Windows 10 taskbar will no longer mistakenly seek to pin the Edge PWA web application.
