Samsung Odyssey G9 2021 may become the first DisplayHDR 2000 certified display

The Odyssey G9 gaming monitor released by Samsung in 2020 impressed us deeply with its 49-inch ultra-wide curved screen and high quality. Last month, the company announced an upgraded 2021 model. Now, more information has been disclosed on the Taobao website. It can be seen that the new Odyssey G9 is equipped with a Quantum MiniLED panel, supports 240Hz G-Sync adaptive refresh rate, and is even expected to become the first VESA DisplayHDR 2000 certified display.

WCCFTech pointed out that Samsung only disclosed some details in the latest announcement. For example, Odyssey G9 (2021) will use Quantum MiniLED panels. The company spokesperson said: The Odyssey G9 gaming monitor released last year caused a lot of sensation, and this year’s new product will rely on the 1000R curvature Quantum MiniLED panel and advanced gaming features to further enhance the player’s experience level.

It is worth mentioning that the highest level of DisplayHDR certification currently given by VESA is still only at the level of 1400 (meaning a peak brightness of 1400 cd/㎡), but the new Odyssey G9 is expected to be the first to obtain a higher DisplayHDR 2000 certification.

If all goes well, Odyssey G9 (2021) is expected to announce its first VESA DisplayHDR 2000 certification at the same time as the full specifications are announced-meaning that the peak brightness can reach 2000 cd/㎡, which is directly double the 2020 model. As for the panel body, it is still a 49-inch VA specification with a resolution of 5120×1440 (dual QHD). However, with the support of the MiniLED backlight, the new model will have 2048 locally adjustable areas, and the contrast ratio has also increased to 4000:1.

In terms of refresh rate, Odyssey G9 (2021) supports 240Hz and is compatible with NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Pro adaptive refresh rate technology, supplemented by 10-bit color depth/95% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. Currently, the estimated launch date marked on the Taobao website is June 2021, which is exactly one year after the launch of the 2020 model. For reference, the old model is priced at $1479.99, while the new model is about $4,580 (29,999 RMB).
