Windows 10 April 2021 update will automatically uninstall the classic Edge browser

As part of the April 2021 “Patch Tuesday”, Microsoft has officially dropped support for the classic Edge browser. Specifically, this month’s update will automatically uninstall the old version and download and install the new Microsoft Edge browser with the Chromium kernel. If you have actively installed the new version of Chromium Edge, this cumulative update will only remove the classic Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft wrote in the update instructions: When you apply this update to the device, it will remove the old version of the Microsoft Edge desktop application that is no longer supported and install the new version of Microsoft Edge.

The new version of Microsoft Edge has better built-in security, supplemented by the best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem. For Windows 10 enterprise users, it is even safer than the Google Chrome browser.

As part of the upgrade, all data on the classic Microsoft Edge browser (including bookmarks, history, saved passwords, etc.) will be automatically migrated to the latest Chromium Edge browser. Microsoft added that it does not recommend that you skip this update because the monthly cumulative security patches include important updates to the Windows 10 operating system.

During the update, the user’s Windows 10 default/personalized settings will be fully respected, such as the default browser settings/fixed icon positions on the taskbar. Finally, as a cross-platform product, the new Microsoft Edge browser not only runs on Windows 10, but is also compatible with desktop platforms such as Windows 7/8.1, macOS, Linux, and Android/iOS mobile platforms.
