And the new Samsung patent introduced in this article describes a blood pressure measurement program for folding screen devices. Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital pointed out that Samsung Electronics submitted a patent application entitled “Methods for Estimating Biological Information Using Foldable Electronic Devices” to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in April 2020, and on March 25, 2021 Officially announced to the outside world.
Judging from the illustration in the document, this biosensor detection solution under the flexible screen can be used for in-folding tablet/folding screen smartphones like Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2. By placing the index finger on the folding screen sensor to obtain image data, the system converts the pixel intensity into the pulsation amplitude, and then analyzes and presents relevant health information.

In addition to blood pressure, Samsung claims that this program can also be used to evaluate vascular age, aortic pressure waveform, vascular compliance, pressure index, and fatigue index. As an alternative, Samsung also envisions a method of placing the sensor on the outside of the device and measuring it by sticking to the palm. Or pinch the sensors at the edge of the screen at the same time on both sides of the device to accurately calculate the propagation time (PTT) of the pulse signal and output the blood pressure value.
In addition, in order to further improve the accuracy of the measurement, Samsung also hopes to consider the user’s gender, weight and BMI index at the software level, as well as information such as the temperature and humidity of the measurement environment. Then receive feedback about their health through a predefined model.
Although it is not clear whether Samsung will integrate this function into its own folding screen devices in the next few years, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, which have unified digital naming, are still very likely to be implemented around July 2021.
