Apple was fined $12 million for violating Russian antitrust law

On April 27th, Apple was fined approximately $12 million by the Russian Anti-Monopoly Service for abusing its dominant market position. On the morning of April 28, the topic “Apple will be fined $12 million by Russia” appeared on hot searches, causing heated discussions among users.

On April 27, the Russian Anti-Monopoly Service issued a notice stating that Apple would be fined 906,299,392.16 rubles (approximately 12 million U.S. dollars) for violating the Russian anti-monopoly law. The bureau determined that Apple had abused its dominant position in the application market. Firstly, it hinders R&D personnel from developing parental monitoring applications. Secondly, the access rules of the Apple App Store are not transparent enough.

It is reported that the above-mentioned problems of Apple were first discovered by Kaspersky Lab of Russia. After a Kaspersky Child Safety (KSK) app developed by the company entered the Apple Store, some parental monitoring functions of the app could not be used. The screen time of Apple’s IOS12 system overlaps with the parental monitoring function of some applications.

The Russian Anti-Monopoly Agency stated that since October 2018, Apple has restricted the development of mobile apps with parental control functions, and most of the parental control functions in many third-party apps have survived in name only.

The Russian Anti-Monopoly Agency stated that they have already issued the relevant judgment to Apple, requesting it to execute the judgment before November 30 this year. And within 5 days after the implementation of the notification to the Russian Federal Anti-Monopoly Service.

In this regard, some netizens said that these fines are just a drop in the bucket for Apple, and they will not really solve the problem of Apple’s abuse of its dominant market position. Some users ridiculed that Apple has recently been punished by many countries for anti-monopoly, and it is about to become a cash machine.
