Chrome 92 will enable default support for backward caching on desktop platforms

Last year, Google introduced support for backward caching on the Android system. When users use the backward or forward buttons to navigate, it can achieve instant page loading. According to a new document we found, the update of Google Chrome 92 will also enable default support for backward caching on desktop platforms such as Windows, Linux, and macOS.

In the Google browser, if you open and close a page, it will be unloaded immediately to clear the memory. For the past two years, Google has been testing backward caching to load previously opened pages faster when users click the backward or forward buttons.

Once enabled, if you visit a previously visited page and use the back/forward navigation, the page should be able to reopen immediately instead of reloading the resource again. This feature allows the browser’s back and forward buttons to work almost instantly.

“Backward caching is a browser feature that improves the user experience by keeping the page alive after the user navigates away from the page, and reuses it for session history navigation (browser backward/forward buttons, history .back, etc.) to make navigation instantaneous. “Google pointed out in a new document: “The pages in the cache are frozen and do not run any JavaScript.”

Google’s back/forward cache (bfcache) caches the entire page, which allows the browser to immediately restore the complete stage of the page when the user navigates backward, as shown in the GIF above. It will also play a role when navigating forward to previously visited pages.

This feature will be enabled on the desktop platform in the next few months. Google is currently planning to start “experimental promotion” with Chrome 92 and expand its coverage in the coming months. It is not clear when this feature will be enabled for everyone, but interested users can manually turn on “backward caching” from Chrome’s Flag menu.

In addition to the speed upgrade, Google is believed to be developing a new Chrome sharing center that allows users to copy the URL of the page, generate a QR code, and cast the tag to another connected device.
