Apple Music for Android 3.6 also prepares for lossless audio

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Apple Music service will get a “HiFi” streaming option, which may be launched together with iOS 14.6. Today, we found that the Android version of the Apple Music app is also working hard to achieve lossless audio streaming.

Currently, the Apple Music app only provides two quality options: one is higher quality, and the other is to reduce data usage. These options can be used as a simple switch, usually allowing you to make streaming media use less data when Wi-Fi is turned off. As discovered in the iOS 14.6 beta, Apple Music will get a high-fidelity streaming option in the near future.

With the arrival of Apple Music for Android 3.6, high-quality audio streaming and download options will appear in the latest version. As you might expect, Apple has also specially produced a reminder about how much data and storage the high-quality audio will use.

The lossless audio file retains every detail of the original file. Turning on this feature will consume more data.

Lossless audio files will use significantly more space on the device. 10GB of space can store approximately: 3000 high-quality songs; 1000 lossless songs; 200 high-definition lossless songs. Lossless streaming will consume significantly more data. A 3-minute song will be approximate. -1.5 MB (high efficiency)-6 MB (high quality, 256 kbps)-36 MB (lossless, 24-bit/48 kHz)-145 MB (high-definition lossless, 24-bit/192 kHz) Support varies, depending on the source of the track Availability, network conditions, and connected speakers or headset capabilities.

What’s more noteworthy is that content such as Dolby Atmos and Dolby Audio was previously thought to appear on iOS, while the Android application only mentions lossless audio, and there is no sign of integrating Dolby sound technology. More specifically, the Android version of Apple Music will provide two types of high-fidelity audio streaming/downloading, namely lossless and high-definition lossless.

The biggest difference between these two options is that high-resolution lossless audio will provide (up to) 192kHz audio, while standard lossless audio will provide 48kHz. Both formats will use Apple’s lossless ALAC codec instead of the lossy AAC codec commonly used by Apple Music to compress music.
