Apple Music announced last night that it will provide free lossless music and Dolby Atmos options from June, but AirPods, AirPods Max and AirPods Pro will not support lossless music. Apple’s lossless audio is encoded into Apple’s lossless audio codec files, with lossless quality ranging from 16-bit 44.1kHz to 24-bit 48kHz. Hi-Res Lossless provides 24-bit 192kHz quality.
Apple confirmed to foreign media T3 that when pairing AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max with the iPhone, they only support the Bluetooth AAC codec and will not be able to play Apple Music lossless files.
Apple did not mention AirPods compatibility in the press release announcing the new features. On its website, Apple confirmed that lossless audio can be listened to on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV. HomePod is compatible, although Apple’s announcement did not list it.

To listen to lossless audio on an iOS device, you need a wired headset compatible with the ALAC format, and you may also need a digital-to-analog converter. Apple also stated that AirPods Max does not support lossless audio playback via Lightning.
Although AirPods, AirPods Max and AirPods Pro do not support lossless audio, they support Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and by default, Apple Music will automatically play Dolby on all AirPods and Beats headsets with H1 or W1 chips Atmos music. With the support of spatial audio, artists will be able to create an immersive experience, providing users with multi-dimensional sound and clarity.
