Global smartwatch shipments increase by 35% in Q1 2021

According to the latest report released by Counterpoint Research, global smartwatch shipments in the first quarter of 2021 increased by 35% year-on-year. Among them, Apple continues to maintain the leading position.

Due to increased demand for Apple Watch Series 6, the overall Apple Watch product line increased by 50% year on year. The company’s market share this quarter also increased by 3 percentage points over the same period last year, reaching 33.5%.

On the other hand, Apple’s global competitor Samsung’s shipments increased by 27% year on year. Senior analyst Sujeong Lim commented that Apple Watch occupies a third of the market, not only due to Apple Watch Series 6, but also Apple Watch SE.

He said:

Apple can expand its product portfolio from Watch SE to Series 6 in due course, thereby further consolidating its leading position in the market. It is hoped that Google’s new Wear OS platform will be shipped in the next-generation Galaxy Watch series at the end of autumn. This will be a good thing for related companies.

In addition to improving the performance of the battery and other aspects of the cooperation between the two parties, the key to smartwatches is artificial intelligence, enriching applications and services, and interactive integration with Android phones. Samsung will also be able to better target a wider user base of Android smartphones. With the completion of the Fitbit acquisition, Google should be able to enhance the Wear platform through fitness features and service integration.
