Microsoft Edge now allows vertical stacking of tabs without a title bar

Microsoft is making another major change in the appearance of Chromium Edge on Windows 10 and macOS, and it may be enough to tempt you to leave the Google Chrome browser, especially if you like the browser’s iconic vertical tab feature. Last year, Microsoft introduced the ability to switch from horizontal tabs to vertical (left-hand side). This feature is officially called vertical tabs. Its purpose is to reduce clutter and improve the overall multitasking experience.

When a large number of tags are opened horizontally, the captions on the tags are truncated and become very short, and you may find it difficult to identify them by looking at their reduced favicon. Vertical tabs solve this problem through support for extra space and drag and drop. However, the problem with the vertical label layout is that the title of each page is also visible in the horizontal direction.

As you can see in the screenshot above, each label gets a larger text description, but obviously, some space at the top is wasted. Because of user feedback, Microsoft now hopes to free up space at the top of the browser window.

In Edge 91 or newer, it is now possible to hide the title bar when using vertical tabs. Microsoft Edge can be set to hide its title bar when the vertical tab layout is activated. This feature can be controlled through the browser settings.

However, for the time being, it can only be enabled through an experiment flag, as follows:

  • After updating to Edge 91, open Edge://flags.
  • Search for the “Vertical tabs hide title bar” tag.
  • Enable the flag.
  • Restart the browser.

The new vertical label control is likely to be generally available through controlled launch in the next few weeks or months. If you want to try the new layout in the stable version of Edge without downloading the beta or canary version, you can also follow the steps above.

Once the mark is enabled, space will be released and the window control position will be slightly changed. In the near future, users can also right-click the title bar or right-click the blank area of the tag management to enable or disable the title bar.

In addition to the vertical tab improvements, Microsoft Edge 91 is also equipped with sleep tabs, startup enhancements and other improvements, including an immersive reading mode for Wikipedia pages.
