According to several rumors, Samsung is working on its own version of Google’s Wear OS for its next generation of smartwatches. The South Korean tech giant is expected to announce the new software on June 28.
Rumor: Wear OS for new Samsung Galaxy Watch announced on June 28
The close cooperation between Samsung and Google is slowly starting to bear fruit. Samsung is expected to announce a modified version of Google’s Wear OS on June 28, according to 9To5Google. The software will be available for the first time on the unannounced Galaxy Watch 4 series.
As part of the Mobile World Congress 2021, Samsung will host a virtual session, which will be about a ‘new watch experience’. Briefly explaining the session, Samsung said: “The Galaxy ecosystem of connected devices, services and partnerships offers people choice, freedom and opportunity. We are reinventing smartwatches and creating new opportunities for developers and consumers alike.”

Google Wear OS
It is not yet known to what extent Samsung’s version of Wear OS will differ from the original. Earlier there was talk of One UI-like jacket, to give the software its own look and exclusive features.
From Tizen to Wear OS
Samsung’s current smartwatches all run on Tizen OS. Samsung has developed Tizen itself in the past in collaboration with Intel. While Tizen works fine, it’s far from ideal for app developers. Wear OS is simply much more accessible to new apps. Thanks in part to the new collaboration between Samsung and Google, a switch to Wear OS does not come as a surprise.
Although Samsung does not confirm anything with its explanation of the June 28 session, the story does support the switch to Wear OS – mainly because developers are explicitly mentioned.
