According to the latest reports, Apple developer Garrett Davidson said at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) that Apple is developing a new password authentication feature, where users can use Face ID and Touch ID-based account authentication instead of passwords. A feature in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey-Passkeys in iCloud Keychain will store a new WebAuthn certificate named “passkey” in the iCloud Keychain.
When creating an account with a key, there is no password to deal with. Users can log in and verify the account through Touch ID or Face ID. No password is required because Apple devices handle the generation and storage of the unique password used by the website, so logging in is just a matter of entering the user name and verification. Thanks to the iCloud keychain, the keys are encrypted end-to-end and synchronized on all Apple devices.
Since all information is stored in the iCloud keychain, even if the Apple device is lost or stolen, the certificate will be preserved. The key is more secure than most passwords plus two-factor authentication solutions, and developers can easily implement support for logging in through the key. Currently, keys are only available for Apple devices, so Apple is discussing a broader solution with FIDO and World Wide Web Consortium partners to allow users to delete passwords on non-Apple devices.

The keys in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey are designed for testing, not for production accounts because Apple is testing this feature. As part of years of efforts to replace passwords, Apple allows developers to test passwords. It is reported that the focus of this preview version is authentication technology, an implementation of WebAuthn supported by the iCloud keychain. Getting rid of passwords across the industry will require thoughtful and always applicable design patterns.
