iPhone production will reach 223 million units in 2021

TrendForce, a market research firm, announced the latest report predicting that with the easing of the new crown pneumonia epidemic and economic recovery, Apple’s smartphone sales will increase significantly this year, and iPhone production will also increase sharply.

TrendForce predicts in the report that iPhone production will reach 223 million units in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%. The company also said that although continued global chip supply shortages may have a “restrictive effect” on Apple’s efforts to increase production, there is still room for additional “small growth” in the future.

Huawei’s decision to temporarily withdraw from the high-end smartphone market is also expected to benefit Apple. In theory, this will provide more demand for Apple products. For the next-generation models, TrendForce calls it iPhone 12s instead of iPhone 13.

The company believes that the market pays more attention to the appearance and pricing of this smartphone. TrendForce said that as far as Apple is concerned, the innovation in appearance is not particularly important. The main change is that the bangs on the screen will be reduced in rumors.

Outsiders believe that Apple may also release four models this year, which can be used as an extension of the iPhone 12 series and adopt an active pricing strategy similar to the current generation of products to maintain its market share of high-end smartphones.

Although the price of key components has risen due to tight supply, Apple may consider the growth of peripheral services related to iPhone sales growth, such as Apple Music subscription service, and will keep current prices roughly unchanged.

However, due to disappointing sales of the iPhone 12 Mini, TrendForce claims that the device has been discontinued. The data collected by the company shows that the iPhone 12 Mini will be prematurely scrapped in the second quarter of 2021, which indicates that Apple will focus on cleaning up the inventory of this device instead of producing more products.

Apple launched the iPhone 12 Mini with a 5.4-inch screen in October 2020, mainly to cater to the needs of fans of small smartphones, starting at US$699 in the United States. Although production has been discontinued, the iPhone 12 Mini is still available for purchase on Apple’s official website without any significant delay in delivery. The device is available in six colors, including the purple option that will be available in late April.

In terms of upgrades, the analysis company also gave a forecast. It is expected that the iPhone 12s series will be equipped with A15 processors manufactured using TSMC’s 5nm + process technology. Pro models may use AMOLED panels and lidars with ProMotion 120Hz functionality. In terms of cameras, all models will be equipped with sensor offset image stabilization technology, which is currently limited to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. There have been rumors that this feature will be expanded to more models in March.

The ultra-wide-angle camera of the Pro model will use a 6P lens, which will obviously also have autofocus. TrendForce predicts that the memory capacity of the iPhone 12s is expected to be the same as that of the iPhone 12 series.

Overall, TrendForce predicts that the new models will account for about 39% of Apple’s 2021 output. As all iPhone 12s phones will contain 5G modems, the share of 5G models in the total iPhone production is expected to increase significantly from 39% in 2020 to 75% in 2021.
