WhatsApp multi-device only works with one smartphone at the time

The ability to use your WhatsApp account on multiple devices at the same time is coming. Now a detail about this feature has surfaced that you probably won’t like.

WhatsApp Multi-Device

The multi-device feature, or the ability to use your WhatsApp account on multiple devices at the same time, will be rolled out to WhatsApp Beta within two months. It was also announced that up to 4 devices can be linked, but those 4 devices have a very large limitation.

According to WABetaInfo, multi-device support is limited to WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop and Facebook’s smart screen, the Facebook Portal. So you can’t use the same WhatsApp account on a second smartphone, at least not with the first version of the feature. This is a huge setback for a platform with so many users. We hope that this limitation is not long-term and that an update is coming soon.

Pair With Multi-Device

The website also shares more information about how this feature will work. Users must separately pair their secondary devices with the main app on a smartphone. Once you link your account to other devices, you no longer need the main smartphone to be online. You can connect up to four additional devices, but a second smartphone is unfortunately not one of them.

Users must also have the latest version of the app installed on their smartphone to receive calls and messages from WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop, or Facebook’s smart display.

Why multi-device is a frequently requested feature

You can already use WhatsApp on the desktop or on the web, but the app still has to run on a smartphone with an active internet connection. Actually, your messages and chats are sent to the desktop app or web app by your smartphone.

Multi-device allows you to use the same WhatsApp account which is supported independently on multiple devices such as Telegram, Facebook Messenger and other similar apps. This ensures uninterrupted conversations even if your smartphone is out of range or has no active internet connection. The messages are therefore sent directly to WhatsApp’s servers – so that process no longer runs through your phone.
