Microsoft explains the reason for the minimum system requirements of Windows 11

After Microsoft released Windows 11 last week, it announced the minimum system requirements. Microsoft decided to remove the older generation CPUs from the Windows 11 compatibility list, triggering condemnation from users.

Today, Microsoft pushed the first preview version of Windows 11 and then updated the minimum system requirements. Microsoft said that they are testing the compatibility of the 7th generation Intel processor and AMD’s first-generation Ryzen to determine whether the official version of Windows 11 will join this Class CPU support.

From the perspective of Microsoft’s minimum hardware requirements, Windows 11 requires hardware to provide protections such as Windows Hello, device encryption, virtualization-based security (VBS), hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), and secure boot, thereby improving security.

Microsoft also shared more details about “Why do we update the Windows 11 system requirements”. Microsoft explained that their minimum requirements follow three principles: safety, reliability, and compatibility.

  • Security: These new features have been proven to reduce malware damage by 60% on test models. To meet this principle, all CPUs that support the Windows 11 operating system have an embedded TPM, support secure boot, and support VBS and specific VBS capabilities.
  • Reliability: Devices upgraded to Windows 11 will be in a supported, supported and reliable state. By choosing a new Windows-driven CPU and getting support from OEMs and their partners, they achieved a 99.8% crash-free experience on these models.
  • Compatibility: Windows 11 has high compatibility. It requires users to use a dual-core processor above 1GHz, 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. This is the minimum system for Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.
