Microsoft previews a large number of new features coming to the Edge Insider beta

Microsoft just announced on the What’s Next page on the Edge Insider website that testers will soon usher in a large number of new features. From the processing of PDF documents to changes in the function of tab grouping to the adjustment of stores and certain policies, the new roadmap has given a clear plan. As for when these new features will arrive in the stable channel, it is currently unknown.

  • First of all, starting from the Edge 94 version, we will be able to add free form text boxes to PDF documents, and users can add visible comments by this.

At the same time, the PDF viewing and marking experience will also usher in improvements. Users can add free-form highlighters to highlight the parts of the PDF that users do not have the right to comment on, as well as scanned documents.

  • Secondly, starting from the Edge 97 version, users can choose to start the browser in the Progressive Web Application (PWA for short) without having to call the full version of the native browser.

In addition, starting from the Edge 94 version, notifications from PWA applications will no longer be displayed as from the Microsoft Edge browser, but the report will display the name of the PWA application.

  • Starting from the Edge 95 version, the experience transition between modern browsers/IE mode will also be improved. Referencing headers, posting data, form data, and request methods will all be forwarded correctly between the two experiences.
  • Starting from the Edge 93 version, users will be able to enter the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode more easily. When hovering the mouse over a supported video, you will see a toolbar that allows the user to view the video in the PiP window.

However, in order to keep users’ attention, starting from the Edge 92 version, Microsoft has changed the auto-play setting of media from the default allowed to restricted.

  • Users who use Microsoft’s parental management function will soon see new improvements in content filters (support for filtering video content on websites such as YouTube) to prevent children from accidentally navigating to inappropriate videos.

In addition, by enabling the Allow access only to permitted sites mode, parents will be able to see an option to add the list of educational sites to the whitelist with one click.

  • Starting from the Edge 93 version, Microsoft will enable the tab grouping function. Through customization options, users can efficiently find, switch, and manage tabs across multiple workflows.
  • Starting from the Edge 93 version, users can go to the edge://settings/appearance settings page and select Hide Title Bar under the custom Toolbar item.
  • Starting from the Edge 93 version, the browser can automatically translate relevant content into the system’s preferred language when the user visits a web page based on an unknown language. If necessary, the user can also click to display the original page or disable the automatic translation option.
  • Interestingly, Edge Insider testers can also more easily understand the historical prices of specific products when browsing shopping websites. This feature currently supports 9 online retailers including Amazon.
  • Starting from the Edge 95 version, Microsoft has improved the experience of using browser favorites. For students and researchers, the new version of favorites will support English and reading lists.
  • Starting from the Edge 94 version, enterprise administrators will be able to usher in more flexible configuration options during the initialization phase. Including specifying the starting page, adding/deleting other pages, and continuing to browse from where you left off, etc., while ensuring that the set of pages specified by the policy can also be opened.
  • Finally, thanks to the introduction of Initial Preferences, starting with the Edge 93 version, Microsoft will make enterprise deployment easier.
